Artwork Story

A boy takes a small boat out on his own. Beneath him, a young seal moves through an underwater world the boy may never fully experience. Both are exploring.  The boy seems to say, I think I can handle being out here. The seal comes a little closer, as if thinking, I think I can go see what that is. For a moment, their two worlds meet.

I think familiarity changes our relationship with nature. When we experience wildlife around us, learn about it, and begin to understand how other creatures live, they stop feeling quite so separate from us. We realize that we share these places. And their future becomes connected to ours.

That connection can grow into respect; cleaning up after ourselves, protecting the places wildlife depends on, and paying attention to how the way we live affects the living world around us.

We are never too old to become curious again, to learn something new about the world beside us, or to find our way back into relationship with it.
