Artwork Story

I first saw a manatee more than twenty years ago. Until then, I didn't even know they existed. Something about these enormous, impossibly calm animals stayed with me.

Years later, I went looking for them in Florida. They were migrating, and I missed them. On another trip, I missed them again.

Eventually, I found them.

The girl in the paper boat came from that experience. Paper boats have become a symbol in my paintings for finding another way, continuing forward even when the way there isn't obvious or conventional.

She is quietly searching. Maybe she knows the manatees are beneath her. Maybe she doesn't.

Keep looking. There is often more than one way to get where you want to go.
