Artwork Story

There is something about camping beside the ocean at night. You make a fire, get ready for bed, crawl into your tent and somewhere out there, an entirely different life is going on.

Maybe there are orcas moving through the water. Maybe they're miles away. You won't see them tonight, and they certainly don't know you're tucked into a tent nearby. But you're sharing the same night.

I wanted this painting to let us see beyond what is normally visible. The orcas are still in the ocean—we just get a glimpse into their world while both lives continue under the same night sky.

Out in the ocean, the orcas are traveling through their enormous world. On shore, someone has made a small circle of warmth with a tent and a fire.

Neither has to see the other for both to be real.
