Set in the open meadows of Yosemite Valley, Wearing the Wild is an invitation to remember the parts of ourselves that feel most alive—curious, free, imaginative, and deeply connected to the natural world.

Artwork Story

As children, we don't spend much time wondering whether we belong in nature. We simply step into it with curiosity and imagination.

When I painted Wearing the Wild, I wasn't thinking about a child pretending to be a bear. I was thinking about the freedom children have to become completely immersed in the world around them. For a little while, there is no distance between imagination and reality.

The mother bear and her cub quietly watch from the meadow. No one is afraid. No one needs to prove they belong. The mountains, the meadow, the bears, and the child all share the same landscape, each with their own place in it.

Somewhere along the way, many of us begin to believe that the wild is something outside ourselves—a place we visit before returning to our "real" lives. But I don't think that's true. I think the qualities we admire in the natural world—curiosity, wonder, courage, freedom, and play—have always been part of us.

I hope this painting reminds you that becoming whole isn't about becoming someone new.

It's about remembering who you've always been.
